Top 11 Signs it's Time for a New Home

Sometimes, life events or personal situations call for a new home. The realization could hit you all at once, or you may have had a sneaking suspicion for a while now.

Here are the 11 top signs it’s time for a new home. If any of these has you saying “yep, that’s me,” it might be time to consider a move.

1. You’re Spending too Much on Home Repairs

Older homes are charming, but they can become expensive. Even newer homes can become a money pit if you’re not careful. If costs for maintenance, repairs, or upgrades are becoming an ongoing affair, you might want to consider moving to a new and more cost-effective home.

2. The Nest is Empty

A big home is great but it can be a lot to keep up with. Once the kids are gone, all that space can feel overwhelming and even a little sad. If you have unoccupied rooms that nobody’s using, downsizing to a smaller home can save you time and money on maintenance.

3. You’re Seeking Financial Independence

Let’s say you’ve been killing it in your job and no longer need help with costs. Packing up and moving to a house built for one is an incredibly validating reward for all that hard work, not to mention saving you money. Goodbye, messy roommates!

4. You’ve Outgrown Your Storage

Has the garage been feeling really full lately? Do you fear opening the hall closet without setting off an avalanche? Whether you’re a collector, a pack rat, or a project person, storage space is a must. Reducing clutter could mean a thorough clean-out, a garage sale, or installing new shelving. If that doesn’t work, you may want to seek out a home with more space.

5. The Kids Need More Space

Many parents want their home to be the go-to hangout for all the neighborhood kids, but they just don’t have the space for it. If your kids are always running off to use the neighbors’ backyard, pool, or playroom, you might want to search for something new. Make sure a comfortable hangout spot is at the top of your priorities list.

6. You Have a Dream

Do you have a passion project that’s waiting to take flight? Maybe you need a photography studio, a work space for the boat you’re building or a dedicated office for your budding business. Whatever your dream is, sometimes a new home with the right type of space is all that’s holding you back from realizing it.

7. The Neighborhood is No Longer a Fit

Neighborhoods are constantly evolving, and there’s not much you can do about it. It could be that the new freaky neighbors are killing your vibe. Maybe your hood has become a hot spot and you’re feeling overrun by hipsters. More importantly, do you feel safe coming home at night or walking the neighborhood alone? If the answer is no, it might be time to make a move.

8. Your Current Commute is a Killer

Whether your commute has recently doubled, or it’s been slowly eating away at your soul for years, a move closer to work could be the answer. Research shows that a longer commute has a negative effect on health and happiness. If you can decrease your time in traffic by moving to a new place, why not go for it?

9. Your Family is Growing

A bun in the oven is one of the top reasons why families move to a new home. You’ll need more space for the baby’s nursery or their own room as they grow older, and you may be planning ahead for more than one child. This is, of course, a great time to consider which neighborhoods have the best school districts, safest streets, and access to family-friendly amenities.

10. A Relationship Status has Changed

Relationship status is another major impetus for moving. Things are getting serious with your honey? Congratulations, love is a beautiful thing. While the opposite situation is never fun, starting anew is most certainly the way to go.

11. You’re Soon Moving to a New City

Whether it’s for a job, for love, or just to feed your sense of adventure, moving to a new city will almost certainly require buying a new home. As long as you’re making the switch, it’s a perfect time to re-prioritize your needs. Take an honest look at what you love and don’t love about your current home, and what’s changed since you bought it, both in the neighborhood and in yourself. There’s no reason not to make your next move a slam dunk.
